Introduction
Older people want to make the most of this stage of their life to do new things such as teaching, learning, meeting new friends, helping, and adding value to our society. At "la Caixa" Foundation we offer them a lot of activities so they can enjoy being older.
A very active agenda
At "la Caixa" Foundation we run a pioneering programme at 607 of our own centres for older people in collaboration with different public authorities. These are meeting places for getting to know other people, socialising, learning how to look after body and mind, and for extending one's knowledge. The activities we organise include the noteworthy Computing and Communication For All programme. This initiative, which in 2010 featured 529 CiberCaixa centres, opens the door to the world of computers and Internet. We also run conferences and a broad range of courses that include classes on gym, yoga, and healthy habits, courses on digital photography or English, and reading workshops, memory games, and the film forum, etc.
Last year, over 700,000 older people took part in "la Caixa" Foundation activities.
Care and time, a gift for others
For many older people, feeling useful and helping others brings great rewards. We therefore encourage them to have an active role based on what they can contribute and at the same time respond to the social needs of those who most need it. Examples of this are the solidarity CiberCaixa, where nolder people who have taken their first steps in computing on our courses become volunteers on other solidarity projects to introduce new technologies to the disabled, immigrants, prison inmates and other older people.
A more independent life
To prevent the passage of time from affecting the independence of older people, we work through our Dependency Prevention programme to help improve their day-to-day lives through workshops and all-round stimulation exercises aimed at enhancing their capacities and preventing possible falls. We also provide an adapted transport service so that people with reduced mobility can attend the workshops and an exercise guide with DVD so they can continue the exercises at home.
Continued enjoyment of a home
Access to housing is getting harder, particularly for the over-65s with low incomes. To provide them access to a decent home, "la Caixa" Foundation runs the Vivienda Asequible (Affordable Housing) programme, in which we promote the construction of affordable rented properties.
