Introduction

Since 1997, at "la Caixa" Foundation we have been committed to helping to eradicate poverty in countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America, through innovative and social justice initiatives that prioritise the most vulnerable groups.

Self-development the best aid

One of the ways to break the poverty cycle is to foster a country's sustainable socioeconomic development. We therefore back projects that encourage sustainable economic and production activities geared to considerable improvements in the population's living conditions. To help improve basic social services we offer grants and training programmes in Africa. Through the CooperantesCaixa programme we provide the skilled technical assistance of "la Caixa" volunteers to different projects.

A life-saving alliance

Every year, nearly 9 million children under the age of five years die in the world. A quarter of these deaths could be prevented with new or underused vaccines. To help improve this situation, since it began collaborating "la Caixa" Foundation has provided 11 million euros to GAVI Alliance, the world's first publicprivate sector alliance to fight infant mortality in the most disadvantaged countries by widening access to vaccines, improving their distribution and helping to strengthen health systems.

In 2008, "la Caixa" was likewise the driving force behind the Business Alliance for Child Vaccination aimed at all Spanish companies that wished to collaborate in the work of GAVI Alliance as part of their corporate social responsibility programmes.

As a result of "la Caixa" and company contributions, nearly a million children in Mauritania, Northern Sudan (Darfur), Cameroon and the Central African Republic have been immunised with the pentavalent vaccine (diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, pneumonia-meningitis and hepatitis B).

Responses to humanitarian crises

In recent years we have been devoting growing attention to the victims of natural catastrophes and armed conflicts. We therefore provide assistance aimed at preventing and relieving suffering, re-establishing people's rights and guaranteeing their protection.

Enhancing awareness and training

We offer new channels of social dialogue and debate based on conferences, seminars, workshops and exhibitions. In order to strengthen the management capacity of NGOs, we run training courses both for people with management responsibility, and for agents of humanitarian action.

Fair trade

We promote fair trade-associated projects and help to spread fair trade values in order to guarantee producers a decent income and living conditions.
