A strong commitment to society,
constant since its earliest daysThe Caixa d'Estalvis i Pensions de Barcelona, "la Caixa", is a social, non-profit institution. Its founding objectives were to contribute to the development of the area, avoid financial exclusion, foster saving and investment and carry out social action to the benefit of citizens as a whole. Thus, the social vocation of "la Caixa" is an essential part of its legal structure. From its earliest days, over a hundred years ago, "la Caixa" has been characterised by its strong social commitment and definitive vocation to work for the general interest, both through Welfare Projects and in its financial activity. The financial operations of "la Caixa" have helped make financial integration a reality and to assist the economic and social progress of the country. At the same time, Welfare Projects finances and promotes social, educational, cultural and scientific activities.
This special sensitivity of "la Caixa" towards society is reflected in the recent launch of initiatives that seek to provide an answer to some of the most pressing problems of society today: promotion of accessible housing, granting of microloans, prevention of dependence, encouragement of volunteer work, the integration of immigrants and the conservation of the environment. All this reinforces the desire of "la Caixa" to strengthen its social commitment and so take new and firm measures to cover social needs.
-
Commitment to the future
"la Caixa" Foundation had a budget of 500 million euros for 2010. This investment makes "la Caixa" Foundation Spain’s leading private foundation, the second in Europe and the fifth in the world, in terms of budget volume.
The social area, the entity’s priority, receives over 60% of its investment. Faithful to the principles of flexibility and anticipation and to the objectives of responding to people’s needs, "la Caixa" Welfare Projects has developed new programmes, such as the one addressing care for the very ill and their family members or CaixaProinfància, which seeks to rid Spain of child poverty. The fostering of employment for groups with difficulties, the active and healthy ageing of the elderly or the prevention of drug consumption are other priority programmes of Welfare Projects. Support for education and research, with new postgraduate scholarship programmes in Spanish universities or scholarships designed to train prison inmates, and the improvement of the environment, through care of our country’s natural parks and the conservation of marine biodiversity, are other areas of work to which "la Caixa" Foundation devotes its efforts. Its cultural and scientific initiatives are developed through our CaixaForum centres, the CosmoCaixa Science Museums and travelling exhibitions to every corner of Spain. These are integrated into the entity’s social vocation and have its programmes strengthened year after year.
Welfare Projects is the Spirit of "la Caixa"
